Remember coloring books when you were a kid? There’s something about the smell of crayons and the excitement of seeing a picture come to life that reminds me of how important simple pleasures can be. These days, I truly love adult coloring books, which aren’t X-rated at all but depict intricate floral patterns and whimsical images; in fact, these coloring books are being called modern-day meditation, because of the way people can really get lost in the activity, allowing them to stay focused and quiet for at least a few minutes even in the midst of a busy day.
So it seemed like it would be really fun to take that same concept and turn it into a table cover. I know, you’re saying “What, Carla?!” but, really, this is so cute and even the process of making the table cover is calming. When you’re done, you can use it as an interactive decoration for your own Indian Summer Tea Party: just invite some friends over, sit around the table with colored pencils, some tasty snacks and my Iced Tea Mocktails, and color to your heart’s content. It’s really fun to see the finished product at the end of the party!
And can you imagine the adorable coloring book table covers you can come up with for a child’s birthday party? The possibilities are endless!
What you’ll need:
A roll of white butcher or art paper, up to 48″ wide
Black magic markers
Bronze metallic magic marker
Roll out enough paper to cover the table that you’ll be using for your tea party. Using a coloring book or other images as a guideline, simply begin drawing, freehand, a variety of floral patterns or other images. Keep the images simpler and oversized so that they’ll be a little easier to color in — it is going to be a party, after all! — and keep going until you’ve filled the entire paper. You can do all of the outlines in black marker, but it can also be fun to add a few here and there with a bronze metallic marker, just to provide a little visual interest. When you are ready to set up for your tea party, just roll out the table cover and put out plenty of colored pencils for your guests!
